Open Data Communities

Open Access to Local Data

This site is the Department for Communities and Local Government's first step towards more open, accessible and re-usable data.

It provides a selection of statistics on Local Government finance, housing and homelessness and deprivation, as well as supporting geographical data. All of the data is available as fully browsable and queryable Linked Data, and are free to re-use under the Open Government Licence.

A selection of the data from this site is now available via a searchable Local Authority Dashboard (see the showcase tab, below, for more details).

Getting Started

There are 36 datasets in this site, divided into four themes: housing, finance, deprivation, and geographical data. Start by choosing a theme from the Data tab, and browsing from there. Each dataset has a webpage with details of its contents and how to use it.

How the data is organised

To facilitate browsing and discovery, our resources are grouped by type within datasets. Datasets themselves are collected into broad themes.

Licensing

All of the DCLG datasets on this site are available under the terms of the Open Government Licence. We also include some other supporting datasets, notably Administrative Geography and Postcodes from Ordnance Survey. Please check the individual datasets for details.

Help with using the API

For details of how to programatically access the data in this site, please read our Developer Documentation.

Accessing the data

The data is provided as Linked Data, via this browsable website as well as in multiple machine-readable formats including JSON, RDF, Turtle and N-triples. The available formats are indicated at the foot of each page.

We provide a SPARQL endpoint, as well as an in-page SPARQL console, reachable via the tab at the top of each page, which allows you to experiment with queries as you browse.

Feedback Welcome

One purpose of this site is to test ways of making it easier for users to access DCLG data. We would therefore greatly welcome any feedback from data users, developers or other interested parties that helps us achieve this.

You can leave us feedback about the site, the data or the API by:

Themes

Title Datasets

Housing

Housing is a key policy area for the Government. Decades of underinvestment have led to housing shortages affecting millions. The Government recently published its Housing Strategy which aims to increase housing supply. The housing datasets in this theme allow you to assess trends in this area.

11

Finance

118 billion pounds are projected to be spent by Local Authorities in the 2011-2012 financial year. Find out on what, and with what outcomes by using the datasets in this theme.

1

Deprivation

The Indices of Multiple Deprivation combine a number of indicators across a range of economic, social and housing issues, into a single score for each small area in England. The inclusion of these Indices allows you to compare and contrast deprivation against local authority spending and housing trends.

18

Geography

This theme contains supporting geographic datasets including Postcodes, Local Authorities, LSOAs and Administrative Geography. This enables cross-referencing of data between and within geographic and administrative areas.

Featured Application: Local Authority Dashboard

The Local Authority Dashboard allows you to view a selection of the data that we hold about Local Authorities via a series of charts and maps.

You can search for a Local Authority by entering a postcode, or browse by name. For each figure, there are links to the source data point(s) in the database, from which they are derived.

The dashboard is not intended to be an authoritative or exhausive representation of the data: it provides an introduction to the types of data we hold, and additionally serves as documentation and inspiration to developers of other visualisations or applications.

This section is a showcase of applications and visualisations using the data from this site. If you have made something that you'd like us to feature here, please get in touch by email or twitter.

IMD Mapper

The IMD Mapper is a JavaScript application built by Swirrl. It uses the Index of Multiple Deprivation Dataset along with the LSOA boundaries to plot and colour-code the deprivation values on a draggable map.

Purpose of this site

The key purpose is to help us understand how to move to routinely produce open outputs in an affordable and sustainable way, with products that are useful to and used by users. We’re really excited about the potential, but also keen to hear from you (as users and fellow publishers) to help us test, prove and "show and tell" benefits and opportunities. Why not get involved, and help us make a difference!
